It’s hard to believe that we’re almost half way through our MPISCC year! I don’t know about you, but I’ve really been looking forward to sweater weather, here’s to hoping we get some soon! I was so ready for our Indian summer to come to an end! I’m not sure if I’m ready for El Nino though…

In and Around the MPISCC Community

I am happy to report that your MPISCC Board of Directors have been hard at work, our labor of love, for you our members.  Following is a bit of a recap of what we have involved in the past couple of months:

We went “semi-dark” in September 2015 but we did have some After 5 with MPIs in the City of Commerce, Manhattan Beach and Pasadena. I personally hosted one at the Manhattan Beach Marriott and had 25 attendees! It was a great turnout and a great mix of planners, suppliers and students. A special shout out goes to Marjorie Risinger for coming, as well as for promoting it to her California State Long Beach students. Also thanks to Christine Hartman for hosting a great group in Pasadena and to Meredith DelFosse for hosting in the City of Commerce! Would you like to be an After 5 host? It is a fun and easy way to connect with fellow members and meeting professionals and we always feel the more the merrier! We were so excited about our SOLD OUT October Monthly Program “What’s Next? Who Are You As A Leader? Where Are You Going?” Senior Planner Panel at the Annenberg Community Beach House at Santa Monica State Beach. Hopefully you were able to join us and glean some great information from our panelists: moderator Jenna Paseka, Director of Key Accounts for JNR Incorporated; Judi Froehlich, Account Executive for BCD Meetings & Events; Andrea Michaels, President of Extraordinary Events; and Audra Narikawa, CMP, Senior Manager and Vice President for Capital Group. These brilliant women shared their experiences as well as their career paths that brought them to where they are today in the meetings industry. If you missed the program, look up #MPISCCcareergrowth for highlights via social media. It was an excellent program with some great takeaways for each of us, no matter your involvement in the industry. My personal favorite is “People like to work for people they like and respect.” I’m lucky that both through my employer and through my volunteer choices I get to do exactly that and work for all of you!

This event is going to be a great opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues while having a whole lot of fun! Community Communication

The November 2015 edition of the MPISCC InterCom focuses on Community Outreach. We at MPISCC have long believed that it is important to not only serve our members, but serve our community as well. We have been involved with raising funds and supporting various charitable causes for years and this year we continue our work to make our community a better place. This year so far, MPISCC members have volunteered as “Fans in the Stands” for the Special Olympics World Games and we are gearing up for the canned food drive at “A Night Out with the Stars!” MPISCC’s Annual Fundraiser benefitting Los Angeles Mission. Other planned Community Outreach efforts include our Beverly Laing Golf Tournament & 5K benefitting MPI Foundation and raising funds for Family Time with Ronald McDonald House. MPISCC Community Facts

Recently I was reviewing some interesting facts and figures about our MPISCC Community and some of this information is so impressive I knew I wanted to share with all of you. Our chapter is currently 600+ members strong, with a ratio of approximately 40% planners and 60% suppliers. Our “territory” includes Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Riverside, Las Vegas Long Beach and the Greater Los Angeles Area, though our members reside all over the United States. Our chapter’s overall buying power is $915 M! Yes, $915 M, with Annual Meeting Budgets that range from $50,000 to $10 M plus! Talk about significant!

Our planner members consist of Corporate Meeting Planners, Meeting Management Professionals, Association Planners and Government Meeting Planners. This diverse group of planners had a significant impact throughout our country, holding functions throughout the Southwest, Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, Northwest, Mountain, Hawaii and Alaska regions. I have not even delved into the international locations where our Southern California brethren play a role. As expected, Resort & Downtown Hotels receive the most of our planners’ business but there is also some use of Conference Centers, Convention Centers, Airport Hotels, Convention Hotels, Suburban, some Campus and Cruises.  What this tells me is if you are planning or participating in a meeting at a new location for you — talk to your colleagues for their insights. Chances are one of them has experience with planning or producing on one of these unique locales.

In addition to diversity in location and venue, MPISCC planners are involved in nearly every type of meeting function you can think of, including: Special Events, Management, Educational, Annual Convention, Trainings, Sales Meetings, Board Meetings, Trade Shows, VIP Client Meetings, Symposiums and Incentives. And finally the sizes of meetings planned vary from less than 50 attendees to more than 2,500! Whether you are a new planner to the industry or a seasoned professional, these stats should inspire you and encourage you – our MPISCC planners are a mighty force in the industry.

Another mighty force are our Supplier Members. We are lucky to have a beautiful mosaic of supplier members who offer nearly anything our planner members could need when striving for success. We at MPISCC, at thrilled to have a combination of Hoteliers, Resorts, Cruise Lines, Convention Center, Bureaus, Chambers, Arts, Photo, Sport, Recreation, Event Design and Production, Destination Management Services, Incentive Houses and Audio Visual, Food Services, Speakers, Transportation, and all other suppliers as members and a part of our ranks.

One thing that struck me out of all of these facts and figures is that for both Planners and Suppliers, the tenure of the bulk of our MPISCC members either falls within the 0-1 year range, the 1-3 year range, or our members have more than 10 years in the industry!

We are fortunate in the company we keep! Let’s keep working strong together!

Hand in hand, Planners and Suppliers not only make our chapter strong but, as the numbers above attest, make the Southern California meetings industry strong. I hope this information makes you as proud to be a part of the MPISCC Community as it does for me! We are fortunate in the company we keep! Let’s keep working strong together!
